Leslie Sautter has been teaching coastal and marine geology at the
College of Charleston for over 25 years. Originally from upstate New
York, she received her bachelor’s degree from Tufts University, then
completed her Ph.D. in geology at the University of South Carolina.
She is the mother of three grown children and lives in Charleston.
Eric Horan is a man of many talents. He grew up in the
mountains, once ran a construction business, skippers a boat
for passengers who want to explore Lowcountry waterways,
and has published a beautiful book of photographs.
Scott Nelson graduated from Cornell and got an MBA
from Dartmouth. After a long career in accounting and
investment firms, he and his wife retired to Kiawah and never
looked back. Finding Scott can be challenging because he is
always on the move, but he is generally close to the natural
world, watching and reporting on dolphins and bluebirds,
volunteering at the South Carolina Aquarium, transporting
raptors for the Birds of Prey, scuba diving, or searching for
subjects with his camera.
Juliana Smith is a Naturalist and the Education
Coordinator for the Kiawah Island Nature Program. She
obtained her undergraduate degree in Psychology, with
special interest in animal behavior, and her Master’s
degree in Science and Math Education from the College
of Charleston. In the 12 years she’s lived in the Charleston
area, Juliana’s developed an immense love for Lowcountry
habitats and has become passionate about environmental
education. When she’s not leading birding or field trips,
she can be found outdoors exploring nature’s wonders
or indoors creating nature inspired art. NK
