in weight and mass. This harmony made these objects
appeal to cultures throughout the globe that responded to
Mangiarotti’s organic approach. At its core still in the style
of design from Italy yet something universal, Mangiarotti’s
furniture and objects resounded with cultures where craft
and an appreciation for natural materials was still a living
part of the culture. Mangiarotti was popular in Japan
opening an office there in 1989. He was also important
in design in Turkey especially in the 1970s with interior
designers such as Yıldırım Kocaciklioglu and Azmi and
Bediz Koz creating marble furniture inspired partly by
his examples. In cultures such as Turkey where design
objects were still made by hand Mangiarotti’s direct use
of materials became a model for their own experiments in
craft oriented design with natural materials such as glass
and marble.
Mangiarotti’s longevity would allow him to outlast his
Italian contemporaries from the 1960s to translate his
approach into the latter part of the 20th century to a
global audience. For example, from 1986 to 1992, he
was art director of Colle Cristalleria producing object
designs in crystal. His enduring popularity in the east
as well as the west is a testament to the possibilities of
design in the hands of a master that was keenly aware
of the power of objects made by hand with a modern
aesthetic.
