Defending Workers and Families:
Creating an Economic Justice Agenda
California Room
This panel will open our policy series, highlighting our focus on economic inequality and
related structural issues. The discussion will center around workers’ rights and benefits,
including ways to counter attacks with an economic justice agenda that considers both
equality of opportunities and outcomes.
Emmanuel Caicedo
Demos
Emmanuel Caicedo serves as the state affairs manager at Demos, where
he leads on state-level advocacy efforts. Caicedo has over a decade’s
worth of experience as an organizer, campaigner, and strategist for social
and economic justice. Most recently, he was legislative director at the
Working Families Party where he used electoral power to fight for change.
He built and led coalitions that worked on democracy fights, economic justice
campaigns, and the election of progressives. Notably, Caicedo was a key driver behind the New
York City paid sick days victory in 2013. Previously, he was a community organizer with groups in
the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn—where every day working people taught him the meaning of
power. Born in Colombia and raised in Brooklyn, he was the first in his family to graduate from
college. He has a BA in History and Political Science from Union College in Schenectady, NY.
Rudy Gonzalves

Rudy Gonzalves is the national organizer for the Jobs to Move America
campaign. In this capacity, he engages a national coalition that advocates
for the growth of good manufacturing jobs in the US related to the
production of clean energy railcars and buses for use in public transit
systems across the country. He previously worked as a political director for
labor unions, including the United Farm Workers and SEIU, and as a statewide
coordinator for California Calls. Gonzalves also worked in public government with the Mayor’s
Office of the Census 2010 and as a member of the Monterey County Planning Commission. He
is an attorney and attended UC Hastings College of the Law.
