Vision , Mission and Values
Vision
In pursuance of its mandate through the terms and the purpose of the NCA , the vision of the Tribunal is to be recognised as a competent and credible adjudicator of matters . The vision of the Tribunal is : “ To be recognised as an independent and fair adjudicator in promoting and advancing social and economic welfare of South Africans .”
Mission
The mission of the Tribunal is : “ The provision of accessible adjudication and redress on matters referred to the Tribunal in terms of the National Credit Act ( NCA ) and the Consumer Protection Act ( CPA ).”
The mission of the Tribunal is thus aligned to the purposes of the NCA , which are “ to promote and advance the social and economic welfare of South Africans , promote a fair , transparent , competitive , sustainable , responsible , efficient , effective and accessible credit market and industry , and to protect consumers . The Tribunal exists for the purpose of providing accessible adjudication and redress in relation to the types of matters that may be referred to it or are received as direct applications in terms of the NCA and , with effect from 1 April 2011 , the CPA .
Values and philosophical approach
The National Consumer Tribunal , like many similar institutions , operates within the South African constitutional democracy and is established and has its mission , vision and values shaped by the South African constitution and the resultant legislative imperatives . As such the work of the Tribunal is underpinned and guided by a set of important values , which are mandated by legislation and are aligned to the constitution . These core values are :
• Inquisitorial ;
• Expeditious ;
• Informal manner ; and
• In accordance with principles of natural justice .
The Tribunal is a microcosm of the diversity of South African society , and as such Tribunal members and staff have agreed on the values that are guideposts for determining appropriate action for the Tribunal as it pursues its mandate :
• Recognition : In providing recognition one needs to acknowledge the individual , his or her role and the Tribunal as an institution .
• Accountability : Accepting personal responsibility for one ’ s own contribution within the Tribunal and ensuing that tasks are completed in time , with minimum corrections and are of a high quality .
• Respect : Having regard for other ’ s views , orientation and values .
• Responsiveness : Flexibility in responding appropriately and timeously .
• Approachability : Being accessible and open to ideas , thoughts and actions .
• Transparency : Understanding the basis upon which decisions are made and actions taken and informing all related parties .
• Honesty and integrity underpin our relationships with all stakeholders .
