“Gedung Sate: ‘Kebab Building’ a Heritage
and West Java Province’s Landmark”
Gedung Sate was designed by J. Gerber, a Dutch architect who emphasizes on the
importance of the architecture local context, whether by its style or by its materials; to
be advanced as an architecture style of Dutch East Indies. It was built in 1920-1924 as
Gouvernements Bedrijven for Nederlansche Oost Indie, an office of Departement Verkeer en
Waterstaat (Department of Public Works and Highway Traffic). Now it is used as the office
of central government (central government administration of First Stage Region of West
Java Province). Art and beauty could be seen when the architecture is functioned. The acts
of preventing, taking care of, protecting, and preserving that have been started long ago
for the sake of its existence in the future and to leave inheritance for the next generations;
being successfully accomplished on Gedung Sate.
