Food and Dining “The biggest thing you can do is understand that every time you’re going to the grocery store, you’re voting with your dollars. Support your farmers’ market. Support local food. Really learn to cook.” – Alice Waters, Exec. Island non-profit Sustainable Nantucket’s mission is dedicated to “cultivating a healthy Nantucket by building a more locally-based and self-reliant food system and a strong local economy.” Their efforts include expanding agricultural demand and production, increasing access to local food for the community through a vibrant seasonal farmers’ market, in our restaurants and schools, as well as educating the community about sustainability. To achieve their goals, they’ve spearheaded a variety of programs such as NantucketGrownTM, 98 • 2016 Official Guide to Nantucket Farm to Table, Farm to School and Community Agriculture. All promote the food grown, processed and distributed on island, and enjoin the entire community – from schoolchildren to restaurants to local artisans – to take part in reducing our carbon footprint in various ecofriendly ways. Please visit Sustainable Nantucket’s website, www.sustainablenantucket. org for further information about these and other programs, restaurants carrying the NantucketGrownTM brand, events, sponsorships and more.
