Showmanship Contest This contest is judged based on NALJA member’ s ability to control and present their animal to the best of their ability.
Time: Monday, June 23 at 8 a. m. Registration: All contestants must pre-register by May 15 using the online entry system. If not preregistered, late entries will be accepted at check-in for a fee of $ 100( fee is per exhibitor not per event). Divisions: Novice, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior as described under Individual Sweepstakes Points. Classes will be split after check-in and will be posted.
Rules Exhibitors must show their own animals. Animals shown in Showmanship must be entered in the show. The first round heats will be sorted by age division and randomized. Class breaks will be posted by Sunday evening. Secondary heats may be used at the judge’ s discretion. Ten finalists will compete for the champion showman in each division. The top 10 finalists will be placed from each division. The ring MAY be split for showmanship at the discretion of the NALJA board and advisor based on the number of participants. Seniors will show first followed by intermediate, junior, and novice. Immediately following the selection of the Novice showman, a mandatory meeting will be held with the Top 10 Senior Finalists to discuss rules and answer questions. After the meeting, finalists will have 30 minutes to set up. Seniors will have 30 minutes to fit their own animals, which are not to be altered before the contest. Animals are subject to a comb / towel test before fitting. After fitting the animals, the contestants will show them. Individuals who have won a division are no longer eligible to compete in that division. Past novice, junior, and intermediate showmanship winners must advance to an older division. Senior showmanship winners can no longer compete in the showmanship contest. Exhibitors must wear the official showmanship shirt and official showmanship number during the contest. Any substitution or deviation will be at the discretion of the NALJA board and its advisors.
Adult Division Exhibitors can show any species of animal. Costumes that go with the theme of NJLSC are highly encouraged. Will take place the same day as the showmanship contest. You do NOT need to pre-register.
Virtual Carcass Contest * See pricing guide on page 15 This contest allows NALJA members to evaluate their breeding and feeding program in the production of meat. It provides contestants the opportunity to study and correlate live animal characteristics with those desired in a carcass.
Time: Saturday, June 21, 2025. All steers will be brought back to a central chute to be ultrasounded during check-in. Divisions: All progress steers will compete in the same division.
Rules: All steers shown in the Progress Steer division are eligible to participate and they will be automatically entered. Each exhibitor has the option to opt out of the contest. Steers will be ultrasounded and placed based on their calculated carcass value($/ cwt) with the total carcass value used to break ties. Grid is based on the week’ s prior USDA market report.
Quiz Bowl This contest judges NALJA members’ understanding of the Limousin breed, general beef industry topics, and knowledge of NALF and NALJA. This is a team event.
Junior Preliminaries and Finals: Saturday, June 21 at 3:30 p. m. Senior Preliminaries and Finals: Saturday, June 21 at 5 p. m. Division: Juniors: 5- 13 years of age Seniors: 14- 21 years of age Registration: A team consists of three or four individuals. Teams are registered by their state advisors at the state officer and advisor meeting on Saturday, June 21 at 2:30 p. m.
Rules: The quiz bowl will be a single elimination tournament, with the first-round pairings and byes drawn at random. Questions will cover the beef cattle industry in general and the Limousin breed specifically. Each preliminary round will include 5 toss-up questions, each worth 10 points. Any contestant on either team may answer a tossup question. But the contestant first must press the buzzer and gain recognition from the quizmaster. The final round will include 10 tossup questions, each worth 10 points. The quizmaster reads a toss-up question until the question is completed or a contestant buzzes in. If a contestant buzzes in while the quizmaster is reading, the quizmaster stops immediately,
