I remember being 4 or 5 in Arkansas, and putting on those new black patent
leather shoes. I loved how the click-clicking of the little shoes on the wooden
floor of the church sounded almost like tap dancing shoes. Then I remember be-
ing about 6 in Chicago and begging to go to church with no coat on in 40 de-
gree weather. (‘Cause how could I show off my new dress if I had a stupid coat
covering it up?)
