See what had happened was . . .

Don ’ t you love stories that begin this way ? Most times , the tale that follows is filled with the kind of story that would fertilize a lawn . Other times , it is one of the eye-opening , life-altering , mind-blowing accounts that the listener wouldn ’ t mind hearing more than once . I ’ m hoping this is one of those times .
See , what had happened was , on the weekend leading into Dr . Martin Luther King , Jr .’ s birthday , I did something I hardly ever manage — I rested . When I woke up , a dynamic idea hit me and before I could talk myself out of it , I contacted eight people to see if they were on board . Some were authors , others were reviewers who had been in the industry for years , one was a triple-hitter : a social media guru , reviewer and aspiring author .
All of them were in . Only the last one took a little longer — our graphics guy who was making a mad dash to secure his place for the last semester at Columbia University . I sat at my iMac for eighteen hours straight with only a few meals , bathroom breaks , and reruns of “ This is Us ” playing in the background . When I have a vision in my mind I have to get it out of my head .
