PLACES OF INTEREST
The Turks and Caicos Islands have many attractions to delight bird watchers such as Bird Rock Point, the salt
ponds and inland marshes but it also has attractions as modern as The Flow Rider which pushes out a wave of
water which people can ride and also the John Glenn Exhibit that emphasizes the link between the islands and
the spaceflight missions. But there are the more traditional attractions to enjoy:
Grand Turk
Lighthouse
This lighthouse was built in
1852 on a limestone hill to
alert sailors to the shallow
reef below. Standing at
an impressive 60 ft above
sea level, it was designed
and built in the United
Kingdom and shipped in
small portions to the island.
Now a historic site under the
National Trust, it is no longer
functional but the old light-
keepers house on the site
operates as a snack shop
and you can walk through
the grounds, enjoy the view
and also do some whale-
watching.
