Signs highlight environmental history
The Englewood Environmental History
Trail consists of 15 historical marker signs
which share the city’s fascinating environ-
mental history.
Some signs explain the physical processes
that created Englewood’s environment, such
as the “Seven Sisters” (the slopes and flat
areas on Palisade Avenue). Others showcase how people used local
resources, including sandstones and shales quarried for the facades of
“brownstone buildings.” Lastly, some of the signs capture aspects of the
city’s social history — the old ice pond, the “Englewood Canal,” and
the Northern Railroad.
The project was developed by long-time Englewood resident Dr.
Michael J. Passow, a 48-year career Science Educator and member of
the Englewood Environmental Commission. The project also received
support from ANJEC (Association of NJ Environmental Commis-
sions), the City of Englewood, and the Englewood Historical Society.
For more information, or to contact Dr. Passow about giving a pres-
entation to your school or community group, visit www.cityofengle-
wood.org/environmentaltrail.
Expanded veterinary services available
The Englewood Department of Health has entered into an agree-
ment with Englewood Veterinary Center (EVC), 25 South Van Brunt
St., to provide veterinary services to residents of Englewood effective
Sept. 1, 2018.
The service provides free rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats
either at EVC. You can still receive free rabies shot for your pet at the
Health Department’s annual rabies clinic, which is normally held on
the last Saturday in February. The agreement with EVC allows resi-
dents the flexibility of when to get their dog or cat vaccinated against
rabies.
Residents who wish to visit EVC must make an appointment by
calling 201-266-5558 or emailing [email protected]. Vouchers
are available at the Englewood Veterinary Center, at the Health
Department or at City Hall.
As is our usual practice, specific information regarding the annual
rabies clinic will be distributed to pet owners with license renewal
reminders. Look for this at the end of December or beginning of Janu-
ary.
