Orava Castle
Orava Castle is one of the most magnificent castles in Slovakia. It’s located in Oravský Podzámok, in
the north of Slovakia. The highest part of the caste is 112m tall. The first written mention goes
back to 1267. Belo IV. took over from Mika Balaša in exchange for Žilina. The most important rulers
were:
 Matúš Čák Trenčiansky (1298)
 Peter Komorovský (1441)
 Matej Korvín (15. Century)
 Thurzo family ( till 1662)
Orava Castle is segmented in 3 parts:
 Upper Castle
 Middle Castle
 Lower Castle
Upper Castle creates citadel, which is the oldest part, it was built in 13th century to defend the
castle. Middle Castle is composed of Korvins’ palace, palace Jana from Dubovec and residential
tower. Lower Castle is composed of Thurzos’ palace, chapel St. Michael, west and east bastion,
administrative tract, Archive tower of Oravan estate, building parish and defensive system
composed of first, second and third castle gate. At the castle were filmed these movies: Dracula in
1922, king trushs’ chin, princess and cadge and Falconer Thomas. In the middle castle is located
castle well. The well was made by Thurzo in 16th century. At the sign of Thurzo family is Gods’
name- Jehova.
