My School Rocks! 2014-04 Arlene Goldstein | Page 32

M y School Rocks! asked Ashley C. to visit a Belk store and put together her own look. We charged her with taking what she learned from the Rockin’ Reporter interview of Arlene Goldstein, and adding in her own personal inspirations from favorite TV shows and other fashion sources. In a sense, we asked her to conduct her own fashion forecasting experiment. You can try this at home or with your friends. Go into each others’ closets and see what trends you can predict for the future! Put together new styles with clothes you already have! Then, explain why you like your creation! In Ashley’s Own Words … The Clothes The Vince Camuto dress I’m wearing is very light and summery. It has pops of color that are very spring-like. It has gems sewed into the neckline, so no neck jewelry is necessary. The Rowen shoes I’m wearing with it are beige and almost blend into my feet, as to draw more attention to the dress. I’m also wearing fun, dangly New Directions earrings that bring out the coral in the dress, and an Erica Lyons bangle with all the colors represented. The Inspirations Celebrities influence us in many ways, especially in what we wear. My personal 32 – My School Rocks! | April 2014 celebrity inspirations include Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence. There are a lot of different clothes and different ways to dress, and often we look to people in the spotlight for help. Not only do celebrities influence our fashion decisions, but designers, magazines and blogs influence us, too. My favorite fashion magazines are Marie Claire and W. My favorite designers are Zac Posen, Alexander McQueen and Oscar de la Renta. Personal Fashion Statement Fashion is like art, and art, in my opinion, isn’t necessarily supposed to look “nice.” It’s supposed to make you feel something. There are a lot of different colors, combinations and types of fashion. Everybody has a different style, and I think it’s important not to judge other people’s styles. It’s not important what other people think of your clothes, it’s important what you think about your clothes and how you feel in them. In the world right now, fashion plays a large part in many people’s lives, including my own. It can inspire a stroke of genius, or make you feel better about yourself. It can be calming and relaxing or upbeat and exciting. It can change a life. Photo provided by Ashley C’s family.
