Students voted during election time and learned about the electoral process. Students attend science lab once a week based on the science lessons they are learning in the classroom. Our science lab is fully funded by the school PTA. 6 We have a monthly Character Education assembly. Each grade level has its own assembly with guest speakers and performances. 2 7 3 TOP 10 1 8 All grade levels have an outreach program. We believe in giving back to the community. Each grade level gets to plan their own service project as their way of giving back. 4 We have a comprehensive approach to student education. We educate and stimulate the whole child by providing numerous clubs that meet directly after school on our campus. 5 Selwyn Elementary formed a student council this year. All three will take part in the opening ceremonies of the April 2014 Special Olympics in Charlotte. In April, Selwyn Elementary celebrates the arts. We turn the school into a gallery and every child has a piece of art displayed in the school. This year, Selwyn Elementary staff supported Cookies for Cancer and sold more than $7,000 worth of shirts for clinical trials and research. 9 The Red Ribbon Reading fundraiser is our only fundraiser. Students receive pledges for the amount they read. Students completed more than 100,000 hours of reading this year. 10 Our PTA pays for every class to attend a performance at the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte.
