Society keeps Pinner’s fascinating history alive
For more than 40 years Pinner Local History society has been revelling in the village’s rich heritage.
ormed back in 1972 to honour the memory and work of local historian Edwin Ware, the society (originally given the rather unwieldy name Pinner and Hatch End Local Historical Archeological Society) celebrates the history of the Pinner area.

The ?rst meeting of the group was held in West House and attracted a crowd of 200 people with some people having to be turned away as there was no room for them. Since then its members have gone on to uncover intriguing historical facts about the area, and publish several books. Anne Cli?ord, a member of the society and a longtime Pinner resident, said: “We just enjoy history and talking about history. I enjoy all the talks and also the yearly presentation by the research group.” The society meets once a month to hear talks on a wide range of subjects from a variety of speakers. It also has a book club and a research group which includes esteemed local historian and author Pat Clarke. A comprehensive newsletter, which includes
reports on all monthly meetings and other articles of interest, is published three times a year. Pinner has a long history with written records mentioning a church in the village dating back to the 1230s. The actual name Pinner has been traced back to Saxon origins. Pinner was one of the ten hamlets of the medieval Harrow Manor but by Tudor and Stuart times had grown to accommodate many features of a typical English village at the time such as a butcher, a baker, a candlestick-maker and a tailor.
The population grew slowly, but steadily, until the building of the London and Birmingham Railway, which ran through the north east of Pinner, High street parking was a lot easier in the past in 1837.
