Mehndi, or henna, has been
around for over 500 years in the
Indian and Pakistani culture.
Before becoming a symbol of
beauty and expression, mehndi
was used for medical purposes
– it was a cooling agent used
in excessive heat. Now, it is
temporarily used during marriage
and it is said that the darker the
henna, the better the marriage will
be.

BRAZIL
In the North of the Tapirape river
in Central Brazil, the Tapirape
tribe are widely noticed for their
painted bodies and piercings.
They have intricate and diverse
designs painted on them, accord-
ing to their gender and age. When
women get married, they then
undergo facial inflictions.
6. JAGUA TATTOOS - PANAMA
Jagua tattoos, customary tradition
in South American culture, are
a temporal art form that dyes
the skin. Similar to henna, it
was previously used for medical
purposes but is now just used to
permanently mark the skin.
