“I’M
ADDICTED
TO...”
Each year the beauty game changes with societal pressures leading to beauty treatments
and cosmetic procedures. However, there is a price to pay to look the best. Below we have
interviewed three individuals whose treatments have led to addiction.
Dying my Hair
Vanessa Largo is 19 years old and has over the years dyed her hair colours across the
whole spectrum. Vanessa’s extreme styles and pretty looks have given her the praise and
attention every girl desires; however, it eventually came at a cost.
“I would call it an addiction.” Vanessa’s urge to dye her hair was a monthly necessity,
“It became a self-confidence thing; I feel better about my appearance because I find
happiness in having good hair. “
Vanessa’s over usage of bleach resulted in her hair falling out in the shower and having
crispy and dry ends. In a bid to save what was left, Vanessa embarked on a year long
journey of no heat usage, organic products and wigs.
One year later Vanessa has been able to return to her natural hair and has seen a
substantial amount of growth, however since February she has dyed her hair bright
orange and black, but without the use of bleach. “I just get bored,” said Vanessa.

Sun Beds
Scott McGlynn is a presenter who has admitted to risking being burnt in the
past in order to achieve ‘a sun-kissed glow.’ “I was addicted to fake tanning and
sunbeds in my 20’s when they were the thing to do,” said Scott.
Scott would spend £15 a week for a 10-18-minute session and was left having to
take week long cold showers until his skin recovered from the burning. However,
Scott still continued to tan until the pain got unbearable. Now Scott has
replaced sun beds with vegan self-applicate tan which gives him his desired look
without any damage to his skin. He has reduced tanning to the use of events and
special occasions only.

Lip Fillers
18-year-old tanning consultant and student, Georgia Barcroft, got her first
lip filler a few days after turning 18. Georgia tops up her lip fillers every
4/5 months in order to look like her role model, Kylie Jenner.
Georgia thinks her appearance is way more flattering now she has had
her lips done.
In the hope of removing her insecurities, Georgia followed in her idol’s
footsteps which has now lead her to frequently wanting to get them
done. “I think it is an obsession, you can’t really stop once you start,” says
Georgia. •
