WHY WE NEED FEMALE MENTORS

"It is important to understand our history to allow for resiliency, and self-sufficiency. Of equal importance is finding mentors who can help us throughout our lives"

It is said that “[t]eens are better organizers, problem solvers, and have a rise in self confidence and awareness” (Amanda Sanders) when they have someone mentoring them. What if teens were given that opportunity? That is a project that two high school girls made happen.

East High School students, Amanda Sanders and Caroline deLannoy got a group of women mentors together to talk to young teens. They wanted to give teens the opportunity to speak with women who have experiences and knowledge that most teens are lacking.

Caroline and Amanda asked members from their community, if they would be willing to have conversations with teenagers for a night. They then invited

their English class to join them at the event. The two girls set a date, and made the event happen. They had tables set up in a room of their ward with conversation cards scattering round tables. As people arrived, they grabbed a plate of homemade goodies and took a seat at a table. It was time to talk!

Caroline and Amanda put together conversation starter cards with the help of their peers in English. Any person at a table could read a question aloud and whoever had an answer would share. The questions would range from “What’s your most embarrassing moment?” to “What’s the best advice you have been given?”. Ingrid Valladares, a student from their English class said, “It was really easy to talk to people because of the table set up”.
