entrance exam in light of Bulgaria’s
demographic situation (students taking
the exam now were born in 1996-97, a
period of drastic decline in births).
The last “cluster” of questions related
to the topics of teacher selection and
quality. Bill explained the recruiting
process for the international faculty: it
is usually done at several career fairs in
the US that connect teachers seeking
an international experience to schools
abroad. ACS competes with a number
of schools and successful recruiting
is a major part of the President’s
responsibilities. The newly subdivided
villas on campus are helping with the
effort, both in recruiting new teachers
and retaining the existing ones for an
additional year or two. Bill also discussed
the specific requirements that the school
has for its international recruits.

Finally, several members of the ACS
Board, myself included, met with outgoing
president Cangiano in Washington, DC,
in February. Mr. Cangiano was visiting
several international school recruiting
fairs along the East Coast, and met
with us to provide an update on the
school. He touched upon recruiting (of
course), the entrance exam, physical
plant improvements, and, perhaps most
importantly, his views on the educational
experience that the school provides to
its students, from teaching methods
to desired educational outcomes to
school certifications. While it was not a
“regular” board meeting, the interactive
nature of the event provided several
board members with the opportunity to
discuss at length broader issues that may
not always be on the formal agenda.

NOTES

Vassil Dichev shared: ‘Currently I’m
dealing with the challenges of raising
a two-year-old son and my new job at
VMware Bulgaria. It turned out that the
job is not a challenge at all compared to
the infinite patience required to deal with
an energetic young boy who still has to
learn what’s wrong and what’s right in
life.’

‘Hello ACSers,
It’s been such a long time since I graduated
the College, and yet – it seems as if it was
yesterday. After the College I graduated
law in Sofia. In 2005 I was elected a Judge
in Sofia, and this is what I’ve been doing
since then. Becoming a judge was a big
challenge for me, and is still such, as this
job is highly demanding, requires a lot of
work and high responsibility and takes
most of my personal time. Thanks to the
College I have the strength and diligence
to do my job and successfully combine
it with doing sports. In-between I met a
wonderful guy, got married, and with my
husband /although he is not an ACSer/
we are looking forward to the big ACS
event this fall, so hope to see you guys
there!’
