Whatever you wear - be YOU. Be HAPPY.

Boys and girls can wear whatever they want, it’s up to them what they decide to do in life such as, girls may like dressing up and playing with dolls but may also like playing football, playing with guns and racing cars, such as the same with boys. In our society, we are told that boys are supposed to do certain things and others aren’t allowed to do things that they want because they are for the opposite gender. For example, Neve spoke to a local Lanark adult male who told her that if he saw a boy wearing a dress he “…would probably laugh.”. Neve wasn’t satisfied with this answer and so asked him why he would do this, he responded “Because it would be weird seeing a man in a dress because you don’t see it often.” Neve asked him what he would do if his son wore a dress and he said “Dresses aren’t for boys, they are for girls.”. Again, we weren’t really surprised by this response. We disagree with this opinion, but our society is not as accepting of boys wearing what is thought of as ‘girls clothes’ as they are about girls wearing what used to be thought of as boys clothes. But times change, people and attitudes and opinions change with time. Even when our teacher, Miss Reid aged 27, was at Primary School in her Primary School girls were not allowed to wear trousers they had to wear skirts and dresses only. That wasn’t even that long ago! So, there is hope for change for boys to come in the near future.

Like Kira at LGBT Youth Scotland told us;

Responding positively to people who freely express themselves through clothing and accepting people’s choices will be important to improve attitudes.
