The colors I use are clear, clean and crispy – in other words, very Scandinavian. Many people wonder if my Swedish background has influenced my style, and I believe that Sweden’ s long winters, and light summer days have been an influence on my designs. Also, the trips I make to Europe throughout the year are a big influence on my work. So to summarize my style, it is a modern classicism with a Swedish color scale and an international twist.
What Swedish brands do you prefer and use?
Swedish brand that I know are among others, Svensk Tenn. According to me, it is a hard brand to use because of their old-fashioned colorful textiles and furniture from the 1950’ s. In the beginning, I always had something from Svensk Tenn in my projects.
When Patrik Lönn Design just started, I also did budget model homes when I used a lot of IKEA’ s sofas, but I made sure to vary the furniture so that it would look like an IKEA-room. In one of my projects, I used frames and pictures from IKEA, mixed with expensive textiles.
Other than that, I use a lot of Orrefors and Rörstrand, since I really like Swedish ceramics and porcelain. Other brands I like from Scandinavia are Royal Copenhagen and Marimekko.
I often buy furniture and designs from Swedish auctions, for example Bukowskis auctions from Sweden. Märta Måås Fjetteström, from the 1920-1930’ s, made carpets. Those are sold at auctions here in New York. It is important to me to use my Swedish heritage in my work, and it is also important that the interior is comfortable as well. The feeling of the home should be relaxed, and not sterile.
What is your best advice when it comes to interior design?
-‘’ I believe it is important to have an interior that can be easily changed, that it is timeless and that you are able to keep the furniture and the colors for a longer time without getting tired of it. It should be easy to exchange the art, textile and cushions as well. That way, it is possible to change them over the different seasons. I think back to my childhood where my family changed the curtains for Christmas and Easter. I think my way of thinking is inspired by that.’’
To summarize: Timeless interior is my best tips.
