Dear participant, We are excited to announce that the 7th Intensive Hands-on Seminar in Tropical and Travel Medicine will take place in Ifakara, Tanzania between 17 and 26 August 2019. With the aim to increase knowledge in global health, you will be given the opportunity to discover the cultural aspects and the healthcare challenges of a previously unknown civilisation. You will hold an active role in a diverse group of 20 participants and your 10-day long learning experience in sub-saharan Africa will offer you a brilliant teamwork experience. Besides, developing a team of professionals with focus in global health, acquiring applied knowledge in specific global health domains and supporting the local community by exchanging knowledge will be the main priorities of this year’s effort. The intensive seminar in Tropical and Travel Medicine has been present in the curriculum of the MSc programme “Global Health - Disaster Medicine” since its beginning in 2007 and has been successfully organised before in Ifakara, Tanzania. The participants’ feedback has always been very encouraging in terms of its educational contribution and their experience remains vivid for years after the completion of their studies. Serving both as a welcoming accommodation and as a training facility, our local focal point, the Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health (TTCIH) will introduce you to the local community through the application of modern methods in medical training, like experiential learning. An active participation in the clinical rounds of St. Francis Referral Hospital and a research experience in the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) will offer deep knowledge regarding the local epidemiology and healthcare provision in Tanzania. Social activities will enrich your daily agenda and provide you with the space for some relaxation and decongestion from a stressful day. In the preparatory level, we commit to make a major effort for a valuable result. Every single detail will be taken care of, for you to enjoy this unforgettable experience. Promotional efforts and careful participant selection, as well as provision of flexible and sustainable logistical equipment, will ensure that no unpredicted incidence occurs during our presence in sub-sharan Africa. Security matters the most and a special position in the organising committee has been devoted to this field, so that issues like pre-departure prophylaxis and liability during the seminar are handled properly. Last, with much gratitude we should admit that this is a shared effort with our sponsors. Financial support is truly important for such an endeavour to occur and the provided sponsorships have been the means that enabled us to materialise what we have been dreaming of since a long time. We urge you to let your enthusiasm escalate and share with us this once-in-a-lifetime experience to Tanzania. Yours sincerely, On behalf of the organising committee Agis Terzidis, MSc, PhD Paediatrician Vice president in HCDCP Advisor to the Greek Minister of Health E-Mail: [email protected] 5
