entertain oneself. Social challenges, such as the lack of 24-hour electricity
provision and security issues can be raised during the walk in the town.
Participants will be given the opportunity to realise their impact to the local way of
living.
During the fifth day of the seminar participants will be in close touch with the
Ifakara community, with the ultimate goal to raise awareness about the daily
challenges of the underprivileged in Tanzania. The Ifakara girls secondary school is a perfect
place for them to think about access to education and possible challenges for girls in the rural areas
of Tanzania, the impact of social status to education and the impact of disease to education.
Furthermore, a walk in the school’s premises will enable them to discuss with the school’s
administrative authorities, as well as students themselves, and to listen to some personal stories.
After the experience of schooling surroundings in Tanzania, participants will be introduced to the
life of the country’s orphans by visiting St. Laurent Orphanage. Sharing personal stories,
interacting with the children and experiencing possible challenges in their daily schedule is a
priority in this part of the agenda. Topics such as social exclusion, disease as a reason for family
disparagement and charity as developmental aid will be discussed during the visit. A free medical
evaluation will be offered by the medical doctors of the team for every child and staff member in
the orphanage.
The seminar’s team will prepare little presents for the children and a monetary donation has been
calculated in the seminar’s budget to be offered as a developmental aid to the institutions.
The sixth day of the seminar will be a travel back to history, since participants will
be guided through two of the most historical healthcare institutions of Ifakara, the
Nasareti Leprosarium and the Ifakara Nursing School.
First, participants will enjoy a guided visit through the leprosarium premises and
its museum-like exhibits. During the visit they will attend a presentation about the
history of leprosy in Tanzania. Discussion about neglected diseases (such as
leprosy) and their impact to the personal and social well-being will be stimulated.
After the leprosarium, the scope will be turned to nursing and the central role of nurses in the
african healthcare systems. The scientific staff of the Ifakara Nursing School will deliver academic
lectures about nursing education in Tanzania, the school’s curriculum and applied teaching methods.
Conversation about possible challenges for future nursing professionals (brain drain, work overload
etc) will follow.
A closing ceremony has also been planned after the debrief sessions of the day, so that the seminar
finishes in a relaxing atmosphere. In the resort’s designated area, farewell speeches will be
delivered and certificates of attendance will be awarded to the participants of the seminar.
