The first day of the seminar is designated as the arrival day. After breakfast,
participants will settle in their rooms and will enjoy some free time to socialise
with the people of TTCIH and to communicate with their relatives back home.
A 2-hour guided tour has been planned afterwards. During their navigation
through the TTCIH premises participants will be provided information regarding
the facilities and the services provided, as well as security information (safety
regulations & evacuation plan in case of emergency).
Located only 10 min away from Ifakara, the Kilombero river ecosystem is an ideal destination for
the participants to get in close touch with nature in the tanzanian province. The visit will include a
picnic at the river bank together with members of the Ifakara community and will act as an
opportunity to socialise. This very experience will stimulate discussion about the importance of the
river for the local community as a means of wealth, environmental stability and historical evolution
of mankind. Other global health topics, such as climate change, desertification, malnutrition and
vector-borne diseases can be raised, too.
In the afternoon, participants will be guided in the town of Ifakara. The group will walk by local
landmarks (churches, shopping centre, school, orphanage etc) and will get a taste of life in the
Tanzanian town during peak hours. Local global health challenges connected to urbanisation (air
pollution, road traffic, homelessness etc) in non-industrialised countries will be addressed during
the visit.
Night will fall with a warm welcoming ceremony for the participants, as the tradition has it in
Africa. It is going to include the preparation of traditional meals in cooperation between the locals.
Music, dance and a general festive atmosphere will enrich our day of arrival in Tanzania. As a
gesture of honour, eminent personalities from the local community are going to be invited, as well.
The exchange of cultural elements and the creation of intercultural bridges is the wished outcome of
this traditional symposium.
Day
1st
Starting from the second day of the seminar, participants will be introduced to St.
Francis Referral Hospital. A 5-day long presence in the environment of the
hospital, during day-shifts, will provide participants with a unique experience
regarding the delivery of healthcare services in Tanzania.
Participants will be divided in two distinctive groups according to their field of
knowledge (health practitioners and non-health practitioners):
• Health practitioners are going to follow rounds in the hospital’s clinics, wards
and outpatients in small subgroups of two people. The goal is to support the local personnel in
their daily routine, to attend patient management strategies and relative therapeutical algorithms,
to experience the way each special department of the hospital is organised etc.
• Non-health practitioners are going to schedule meetings with the hospital’s administrative
personnel and discuss about the way a hospital in Tanzania is managed, its financial sustainability,
the disinfection practices performed in the hospital, the hospital’s plan for disaster and acute
events, the healthcare system of Tanzania and other relevant issues etc.
A rotation system will be put in place, so that every participant experiences the highest possible
number of available posts during the day. A wishlist will be formed in advance and effort will be
made for it to be respected. Participants will man the hospital’s clinics and wards during nights
shifts, too. The organising committee will make sure that participants are smoothly incorporated
among the hospital’s staff and that they contribute highly to the services needed.
The second day’s academic lectures will be held in the TTCIH facilities and will be facilitated by
the centre’s scientific personnel. The agenda will include both medical topics, such as epidemiology
of disease in Tanzania and markers, HIV, tuberculosis (TB), non-communicable diseases (NCDs),
