Laura Karwirwa, 20, opens up about her Music, Life and Love.
“ My teacher really pushed that agenda for me to sing, taught me the song and I actually sang it very well.”
We were to meet at 11.30 am, I got there several minutes before 11.30 but she got there before I did. I survey the room and spot her immediately from her signature half-blonde hair. I walk up to her, on seeing me she smiles and extends her hand to shake mine,( a fi rm hand shake) that tells a lot. I introduce myself as I grab a seat and pick up a conversation hoping she did not wait too long. She smiles again, explains that she just got there; I order coffee as she had already ordered hers. As I get my notebook and recorder out, we get to talk about how sometimes it is hard to get these celebrities to meet you for an interview.“ As long as I’ m willing, I don’ t think there is anything I would lose,” She says.
Who is Laura Kawrirwa?
“ My full name is Laura Karwirwa Mugambi. I have another name that I don’ t use and people don’ t know about it, it’ s Soila. It is a maasai name but I’ m not Maasai. My mum tells me that when I was a little girl, we visited a Maasai homeland and those guys gave me that name which means beautiful. I got to know about it later in life, I never use it. When people are used to calling you a certain name, you wouldn’ t start introducing them to a whole new name. But I love the name. I’ m a fi rst born of two, I’ m 20 years old, I am a second year student at Kenyatta University studying Food, Nutrition and Dietetics.”
