“ Slow going” is something that I experience as an artist while creating and specially when I have to articulate in writing what it is that the studio practice does. I have a non verbal, embodied understanding of the work that I struggle to communicate through written words.
In an attempt to verbalise I produce a few phonemes or even words then I suddenly stop and I am forced to WAIT until I gather the momentum, grasp a thought and then, perhaps, string a small sentence together. The same happens in the process of making. The work will start moving in a particular direction and then for one reason or another it will suddenly stop. I may not be able to do what I had planned or I may not know what is required and I have to wait for the right conditions to be able to continue. The work builds itself within a series of stops and starts and very often I am waiting until the right words, the right ideas, the right tools arrive.
These series of stops and starts give the impression of a stutter.
