When you compare drug allegations for NRL players, to other players in various sports such as Union and Cricket. There are almost none. Why is it that NRL players are the ones that choose to do this, and risk their career and reputation by getting involved with it.
Mr John Grant, when asked about this issue, denied to make any comment on it whatsoever. Could this be because the ARL (Australian Rugby League) are scared to take action in fear of expelling star players from the game? Or is it just simply because they are not sure what to do. I strongly believe they need to take action, and take action fast. Implementing rules and penalties to stop this is the perfect way to do it, and players will be scared out of doing anything stupid.
If there are this many allegations among league players, it's tough to imagine the amount of players that do in fact take cocaine but get away with doing it. How long will this keep up? What should be done to stop it?
Though cocaine isn’t the only issue regarding off-field activities. It is very common to hear about players who have done something stupid while drunk or seriously mess up in some other way.
The incidents involving Mitchell Pearce's dog scandal and Todd Carney in the bathroom are great examples of this. Players doing stupid things off the field with their mates and recording it. Risking their career and reputation permanently by doing such stupid things. This could affect future club deals, reputation and retirement. These players are very well known players and should really be setting a better example to the thousands of children that look up to them, not to mention how they ruin the whole of the NRL’s reputation and make the players seem like they are immature, with poor morals. Personally I think there should be heavy fines in place for any such conduct. Players in other sports aren’t as stupid as this, shouldn’t something be done about it?
It’s time for the disciplinary board of the ARL to get serious, stop worrying about potential financial loss and start worrying about the future of the game for the players and fans.
Josh Dugan and Blake Ferguson, who are notoriously “bad boys” because of past claims and incidences. Have been found to have left Origin camp on the Friday before the deciding game, and drove 80 km to the nearest pub to go out drinking. While they won’t be receiving any fines or anything like that, because technically they didn’t break any rules, though it seriously makes you question the morals and ethics of the players in the Blues camp. Considering you wouldn’t see this from any Queensland player, as these are all players who have good morals and ethics, on and off field. These Blues players are setting a horrible example for young children and teens striving to become a Blues player.
Something is wrong with league. Not on field, but of field. Things like these drug allegations, incidences like Mitchell Pearce's dog scandal and the activities of Josh Dugan and Blake Ferguson happen all the time in the NRL, and in my opinion, the people higher up should be doing more to try and stop this. As it ruins the NRL’s reputation, teaches kids that these activities aren’t bad to undertake in if they're seeing their favourite players doing so, and overall make Rugby League seem like a worse sport to play.
