Chisholm didn't want history to remember her for her various accomplishments as an American Politician, but rather as, "The Black woman who lived in the 20th century and dared to be herself" (Chisholm Shirley).
"Tremendous amounts of talent are being lost to our society just because that talent wears a skirt."
Chisholm didn't stop at congresswoman. In 1972, she became the first African American to make a bid to become president of the United States, running for Democratic nominee. Her ambitious and driven personality demonstrated a youthful role model that many women aspired to be. Chisholm had been characterized as a true feminist, who advocated for women empowerment. During her tenure in Congress, she was champion of minority eduction and employment opportunities. Her accomplishments had led the pathway for others, showing them that women had the capability to achieve greatness despite men or racial scrutiny.
