RELATION BETWEEN THE PROFESSIONALISM AND
PATIENT SAFETY ATTITUDES OF THE NURSES AND
MIDWIVES WORKING IN THE DEPARTMENT OF
OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY
Problem Definition: Prenatal patient safety is the most important part of the
optimal health care of the mother and babies. This research has been conducted
to determine the relation between the professionalism and patient safety
attitudes of the nurses and midwives working in the department of obstetrics and
gynaecology. Method: The research is a descriptive study. This study was carried
out among 89 persons including 42 midwives and 47 nurses which make the 76%
of the population. The data was collected by the survey form created by the
researchers, "Patient Safety Attitude Scale" (PSAS) that is used to measure the
patient safety attitudes of the nurses and midwives and "Professional Attitude
Inventory" that evaluates professional attitudes. Then the data was analyzed by a
computer program. Findings: 48,3% of the participants stated they made medical
error. Inefficacy of nurses and midwives was determined in the study by 36% to be
the factor that has an effect on the failure of patient safety. 91% of the participants
didn't create a report on the error made, and 67,4% stated they were afraid to be
punished when they made a error. A significant correlation was found between
the Professional Attitude Inventory and Patient Safety.
