CARRYING BAG AND MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN IN PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN
Study Objective: The present study was carried out with the aim of revealing the states of carrying bag and musculoskeletal pain in primary school pupils.
Method: In the descriptive study, entire pupils in an primary school were involved in the study. Data were collected through a socio-demographic data form, Self- Assessment Pain Scale, Faces Pain Rating Scale and Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire.
Findings: A total of 354 primary school pupils aged 7 – 12 years participated in the study. The mean age of pupils was 8.07 ± 1.26 years. The bag weight / body weigh ratio of 83.6 % of pupils was 0.11 and 56.8 % of pupils had pain associated with carrying schoolbag. When the pain scale score averages were compared, the score averages of girls( 6.5 ± 6.8 [ 4( 2-10)]) as compared with that of boys( 4.7 ± 6.0 [ 3( 1-6)]) and of those pointing out schoolbag as the reason of pain( 6.3 ± 6.6 [ 4( 2-9)]) as compared with that of other group( 4.8 ± 6.3 [ 2( 1-6)]) were higher and statistically more significant( p < 0.005). The face pain score average in pupils whose bag weight / body weight ratio is 0.11 and over was( 1.4 ± 1.3 [ 1( 0-2)]) higher and statistically more significant as compared with those with body weight ratio of 0.10 and below( p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The result findings suggested that three quarters of pupils carried heavy bags and more than half of them suffered from pains associated with carrying bag. Therefore it is primarily recommended the identification of bag weight / body weight ratios of pupils in accordance with their anthropometric sizes.
