Paul Stafford

Type: His character can be considered dynamic due to the way his perspective and treament toward African-Americans, particularly Katherine Johnson, changed following the ordeal when she served as an invaluable asset to NASA's project.

Description: Paul Stafford was quite indifferent to Katherine. As a co-worker, he was harsh towards her and was unbothered with trying to conceal it. He made it quite clear of how he viewed her as inferior due to her sex and race. He was constantly a hindrance to Katherine when it came to accomplishing her job. Towards the end of the film, however, Paul showed a subtle change of heart and even perspective when he began being a more concerned officemate.

characters

Al Harrison

Type: His character can be categorized as round due to the flexibility of his personality depending upon the given situation.

Description: Al Harrison is the supervisor of the department Katherine Johnson was assigned to as a computer. As a leader, he is efficient, knowing quite well how to direct his subordinates. As a person, he is quite open-minded for his time when discrimination against African-Americans was rampant. He treated Katherine not unlike the way he treated the others under his office; as a matter of fact, he seemed to favor Katherine for her unmatched proficiency and tactful personality.

Hidden Figures Movie Review: Characters

Katherine Johnson

Type: Her persona can be considered as flat because she constantly displayed her capable and resilient personality no matter the situation handed to her.

Description: The Virginia-born African-American mathematician is goal-driven to the point that despite the unspoken discrimination she experienced at NASA, she kept up her duties, working around the circumstances. She is very proficient in Mathematics; in fact, she was the one who computed for the numbers used in John Glenn's flight directory.

Jim Johnson

type: His persona can be classified as static because he went through the movie having the same approach: the admirer-turned-husband of Katherine Johnson. This is mainly due to the fact that his character was not shown to appear in other situations other than his pursuit of Katherine's heart.

description: Jim Johnson was at first, skeptical towards Katherine's Mathematical ability and her desire to compute for NASA. This caused her to be unconcerned with him initially. As the film progressed, however, Jim displayed perseverance to truly show Katherine his sincerity. He refused to surrender to her indifference. Instead, he was consistent with his efforts. He even displayed a change of perspective and eventually supported Katherine with her endeavors and her family.
