Dorothy Vaughan

Type: Her character can be considered as static because she always displayed her desire to lead and help the team.

Description: She is a determined, black mathematician who worked at Langley Research Center as a human computer. She has her own firm attitudes and opinions, and is not easily influenced by other people. She became a section head at Langley. She makes herself indispensable by learning FORTRAN and teaching her coworkers. She evolved from an ambitious young woman to a woman who became a voice for equality at the NACA, where she fought to make sure women are paid equally.

Mary Jackson

Type: Her persona can be considered as dynamic since initially, she didn’t believed in herself but she changed her mind. She also displayed characteristics of a flat character because she remained consistent with her goal to help the team.

Description: Before taking a job as a computer at the NACA, she worked as a teacher and a USO secretary. She is exceptionally gifted but still experienced discrimination from her white colleagues at Langley which makes her frustrated. In order to have bigger opportunities, she had to petition the city to allow her to take segregated classes. Her hardwork paid off, thus, she made history, becoming Langley Research Center’s first black female engineer. Her willingness to speak up and enthusiasm helped her create a fruitful career.

John Glenn

Type: His character can be categorized as static because throughout the movie he’s put in the same situations and he shows similar behavior.

Description: He is an astronaut and the first American to orbit the earth. He is confident, charming and strong in character. He depicts the American dream of spaceflight and technological expertise. He chose Katherine Johnson to double-check the electronic computer’s calculations for his trajectory thus, making Johnson famous among her peers.

Vivian Mitchell

Type: Her character can be categorized as dynamic. At first, she wasn’t friendly and supportive to the female characters but she changed.

Description: She is a strict supervisor who challenges Dorothy Vaughn throughout the movie. She represent the views and attitues of some of the white women who served as managers at that time. She gets a lot of pressure from men and always the bringer of bad news to her black colleagues. In the end, She became friendly with Dorothy Vaughan and wants to see her succeed.
