New Zealand

2012 proved to be an interesting year for the ECONZ crew. With protests, awareness events, car accidents and crisis points for some of our rarest marine animals, it certainly proved to be a challenging year but we managed to cover a lot of ground.
New Zealand but every other chapter around the world, entered into and encouraged others to join in with a creative visual petition campaign started by American skateboarder, surfer, artist and environmental activist Peggy Oki.
‘ Let’ s Face It’ has now gathered almost 6,000 photographs and is still growing! www. lets-face-it-dolphins. com
Race against time for the Maui dolphins Most of the year was dedicated to raising awareness to the plight of the indigenous Maui’ s dolphin. This species – currently estimated at a total population of only 55 – is only found in a small area of ocean around New Zealand.

Every opportunity was taken to educate the public, put pressure on the government and support other organisations in the fight to get these critically endangered mammals greater protection from commercial fishing.
Over 39,000 people and organisations made submissions on the Threat Management Plan currently being reviewed by the New Zealand government.

World Wide Anti-whaling Day! We’ re very grateful to the medical and scientific healthcare community for putting Earthrace Operations Director, Scotty Bowman, back together after a serious car crash.
But we hate the so-called‘ scientific whaling’ that the Japanese perpetuate each year in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
So no surprises that Scotty didn’ t let his accident and several remedial operations get in the way of supporting World Wide Anti-whaling Day!
FINISH THE FINNING
Toward the end of the year, Earthrace officially joined the New Zealand Shark Alliance which has been formed with the intent of banning shark finning in New Zealand waters.
Over 1 / 3 of the world has banned shark finning, New Zealand hasn’ t!
