Safety and Security
The size , infrastructure and bustling crowds at our airports necessitate round-the-clock security measures . The Airports Authority Office of Public Safety ’ s core mission is to safeguard life and property by delivering professional police , fire , rescue , security and emergency medical services to the airport community . Within the Airports Authority , the Office of Public Safety plays a pivotal role , comprising three divisions : fire services , police services and public safety communications . This office embodies the Authority ' s commitment to environmental , social and governance principles through regular community engagement , employee training and research initiatives .
Integrity
The Airports Authority Police Department is entrusted with the primary responsibility of providing superior service to all individuals within its jurisdiction . The department is guided by the belief that its efforts should be geared toward maintaining law and order , deterring crime and enforcing laws and regulations , all underpinned by a specific set of values to guide its duties .
In 2023 , the Office of Public Safety participated in a record number of training hours .
Police Training Hours

The Airports Authority serves the National Capital Region , however our police officers are certified in the Commonwealth of Virgina . As such , officers are required to complete 40 hours of in-service training bi-annually . This training requires four hours of legal training , 34 hours of career development and two hours of diversity training . Officers also are required to qualify with their service weapons annually . The Airports Authority ’ s Police Department conducts firearm proficiency training twice a year .
Many officers have volunteered to take on collateral duty assignments . The officers must also complete training to maintain proficiency in a new discipline . These collateral duty assignments include :

The Airports Authority ’ s Police Department Training Division continuously works to increase the number of officers in our agency . Starting in 2022 , the Airports Authority began offering the Physical Ability Test every Monday , excluding holidays , to accommodate eligible candidates .
