Sunflower Lanyard Program Launch
In 2023 , the Airports Authority launched its participation in a program to identify and assist passengers with invisible disabilities at Reagan National and Dulles International airports .
The internationally recognized Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program aims to provide a safe and welcoming environment and additional support to passengers who need it . According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , more than 12 percent of the U . S . population has an invisible disability . Examples of invisible disabilities include but are not limited to autism , chronic pain , lupus , epilepsy , and bipolar disorder .
Sunflower lanyards discreetly identify passengers with hidden disabilities to the airport community . Additionally , volunteers are available to provide assistance at all pre-security information desks and the USO lounges . Over 1,000 people received Sunflower lanyards in our airports in 2023 .
