Dulles Solar Energy Facility Update
To further its global position of leadership in sustainability , the Airports Authority will host one of the world ’ s largest airport-located solar and battery storage facilities through a partnership with Dominion Energy . Dominion is installing the solar facility on approximately 835 acres of underutilized property in the southwest corner of Dulles under a long-term sublease with the Airports Authority .
The project received final approval in 2023 after an extensive multi-year review by state and federal agencies , including the U . S . Department of Transportation , the Federal Aviation Administration and the Virginia State Corporation Commission . In August 2023 , officials from the Airports Authority and Dominion Energy were joined by federal , state and local leaders to break ground on the Dulles Solar Energy and Storage Project at the airport . Construction began in November 2023 and is expected to be completed by late 2026 .
