Trotting the Globe with Mary Brazelton ‘04
Mary Brazelton ‘04, a Ph.D. candidate in History at Yale University,
returned last summer from China where she was involved in her
dissertation research, studying the history of public health in twentieth
century China. Mary, the recipient of a 3-year National Science
Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, lived mostly in Shanghai
and Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province in the country’s
southwest region and spent most of the year working in the archives.
Mary did some cross-country traveling, visiting Xi’an, the capital of the
medieval Tang dynasty, and Hong Kong.
fundamentals for her college success, not only academically, but morally
as well. Mary is also a graduate of St. Philip’s Catholic School in Camp
Springs, Md. and came to Bishop McNamara on a Moreau Scholarship.
“It felt natural to be there, and I’m so grateful for everything Bishop
McNamara gave me,” she says.
Following graduation this spring, Mary says she may pursue teaching at
the college/university level.
Mary graduated from Harvard University in 2008 with a degree in
History of Science and, while there, served as Arts Editor of the school's
newspaper, “The Crimson”. She says her writing and editing skills were
honed under English Department Chair, Charles Shryock. She also
credits Chris Williams for influencing her desire to learn about different
cultures. Specifically, it was through a class taken with Mr. Williams
during her Senior year where he devoted part of the class agenda to
sharing his traveling experiences and global perspectives.
