THE BEST TIME TO BE IN MUSIC SOC

We're really changing things here!

Welcome! So this is just one of the many changes that is happening in Music Society - our own online magazine! This is going to be filled with all the cool things that we are doing. It's also a great place to find out about both local and university based musicians. But(!) the changes do not stop there!

Talks, Elite Musicians, New Events, Recording Studios, Grade-one-athon and MUCH MORE..!!

The emphasis of the society has been on music that I will very broadly term 'Classical'. I feel we should broaden the focus. Currently the key things we offer are: practice rooms, instrumental lessons, and lunchtime concerts. To enhance what we do already we want to buy more instruments. First on the to-do list is to buy a cello as this is in demand. We are also planning to make bursaries more easily accesible for members whether they want to start or continue lessons on an instrument.

We are also looking at exciting new projects we can put on for members. One such event is the "Grade-One-Athon" taking place around Week 8 (date to be confirmed). This is a great way to help raise money for charity as well as a fun way to learn a new instrument. Another is the 'Elite Musicians' Scheme' [more on page 3]. We are introducing this scheme for both classical and non-classical performers to give them the opportunity to put on a professional concert. Thirdly, we are giving members the opportunity to record their own music in collaboration with Teddy Records. These high quality recordings can be used as demo tracks or even for an album. They are open to any ensemble - be it a band, a string quartet or some other chamber ensemble.

In addition to this, we are introducing the 'Blue Room Talks': a series of talks by some very famous people! Further details will be announced soon but heres a hint - we have a world famous British Film Composer [page 8] and one of the most recogniseable bassists in the world!!

And on top of all of this - a push to ensure student musicians are paid fairly for hired performances [page 4], our new Music Soc football team, AND some really great merchandise to get your hands on shortly! Wow there's so much stuff going on!

More Events!

We are planning lots more exciting events for you [page 5]. Starting this term with a live music/open mic event in The Courtyard in Wk 2, Summer BBQ in Vanbrugh Bowl, a possible concert trip to London, as well as our upcoming Summer Social! So lots of great new cool things happening - this really is the best time to be part of music soc!!
