A Spark to Believe is the debut record from rock quintet Miss Fortune (not to be confused with the League of Legends character). The album was released roughly a year from when the band first started, May 1, 2013 according to their Facebook page. It was released May 19th via Sumerian Records, just five months after joining the label this past December. I listened to the YouTube stream of the album over and over while working my “real job”, so 8 hours of nothing but Miss Fortune, and I still can’t get enough. It is a wonderfully produced piece of work, which would be expected since Kris Crummett (Sleeping With Sirens, Issues) was the producer. Frontman Mikey Sawyer’s voice is nothing short of fantastic, and unique. If I had to make a comparison, I’d say his voice is like a mixture of Tyler Carter and Jonny Craig. There are two tracks I can’t get out of my head; “Take That Shit Back to Baxter” being the first. The guitar chugs sound similar to that of old A Day to Remember, which is always a plus for me. Also, I always love when a band writes a song making jabs at those they’ve had issues with. “The Double Threat of Danger (Acoustic)” also has wedged its way into my ear hole. Usually, I don’t like acoustic versions, they almost always sound weird and half-assed. This isn’t the case here. The same amount of heart and dedication is put into this track than any of the others, if not more. It’s beautiful. The grit you hear in Sawyer’s voice is beautiful. It’s basically perfect.
If you haven’t gotten their album already, why the hell haven’t you? It’s available on iTunes, Amazon, Best Buy, FYE, and their online merch store. Also check them out on tour with Hands Like Houses, SLAVES, and Alive Like Me starting May 23rd!
