Mini-Exhibit
From the Vault: Elijah the Great
Prophet
This mini-exhibit, on view through September 2, 2018,
uses rarely seen icons from the Museum’s collection to
explore the mythological figure of the Prophet Elijah. As
one of the most prolific and enigmatic of the prophets,
Elijah is celebrated in each of the major monotheistic
religions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The Great
Prophet took on the roles of the Greek god Helios and the
Slavic god Perun, both strongly associated with the sun,
as those peoples converted to Christianity. This connection is evidenced in the way
Elijah is portrayed in iconography and in the traditions surrounding his Christian
festivals, as compared to those of Helios and Perun.
