From the Curator’s Desk This is a busy time for us at the Museum! We invite you to plan a return visit soon, and hope you’ll bring guests to introduce them to our “hidden jewel.” Remember that you can combine your visit with lunch or supper at one of the many nearby restaurants; enjoy a walk around Central Park and view the magnificent Foster Fountain; and stroll down High Street for some unique local shopping—all within easy walking distance from the Museum. You can also drive less than ten minutes down the road to visit Tower Hill Botanic Garden. We don’t mind if you combine us with other activities--we just want the opportunity to say, “Welcome,” and show you the finest and largest collection of Russian icons outside of Russia itself. We especially encourage you to come see the extraordinary collection of Greek icons from the Tiliakos Collection on view this summer. Byzantium was the birthplace of the icon as a sacred object, and this is an opportunity for visitors to appreciate the origins of the Russian icon. It’s fascinating to contrast Greek and Russian icons side-by-side and trace how the two traditions diverged stylistically over the centuries. So, welcome and enjoy! We look forward to saying hello to you, again or for the first time. Best regards, Lecture The New Martyrs: History and Trauma at a Greek Orthodox Monastery on Lesvos with Christopher Helali Saturday, July 7, 2:00pm Members $8, Nonmembers $12 This presentation will focus on the unique history and rituals of the Monastery of Sts. Raphael, Nicholas, and Irene on the island of Lesvos. One of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Orthodox world, the monastery is particularly interesting in the way it structures its story in relation to historical trauma, religious faith, and modern Greek “national consciousness.” Christopher Halali is currently a MALS student in Cultural Studies at Dartmouth College. His thesis research is focused on the Monastery of Sts. Raphael, Nicholas and Irene.
