November 2016 hit crowd pullers that is sure to get anybody snapping. “I feel like Rock n Roll or Blues is really the genre to sing socially relevant songs like the ones I do because i feel the lyrics is much more highlighted and it makes it more beautiful. Since the time I have discovered that Rock n Roll or Blues is my genre, I have stuck onto it and been doing more of it ever since,” he said. Earlier to Bluebirds, Rajasekaran was a part of an Anglo-Indian band called “Temple Trance” which mainly did cover music. However it was only around 1975 that he came across Bluebirds and joined the band. Bluebirds, originated in the late 60s with two other stalwarts Rajan (bass) & Jude Reeves (lead guitar) - and kept Madurai upbeat and humming all through the 70s and well into the 80s with their unmistakable rendition of Classic Rock numbers, Pop and Rock and Roll, both in English and Tamil. “We always catered to the Anglo-Indian community in Madhurai and performed more or less at all of their events. Every dance or community event that they used to organise, we would perform there. We also used to perform on all public holidays or any other community gathering. And because my music was localised by the translation, it was very easy for people to relate to my music even though it was an adaption from an original. This is why even today when I perform across bars, pubs, or clubs, I am able to entertain people from 20-60 years of age. I guess it is the strength of my content that has still kept me going and relevant until today,” he recalls. After a gap of nearly 25 years, they broke into the Chennai music scene with a bang introducing four more band members, all extremely talented and professional and each with a distinct style that has taken the band to a totally new dimension. They have headlined performances at concerts, clubs, pubs and personal invitations with brilliant covers of Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, Santana, Beatles, CCR, Doors, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, and Jethro Tull etc. With an equal mix of yesteryear hits from the 60s through to the 80s, sealing their dominance in catering to all tastes and music enthusiasts. When asked if anything had changed, he gladly went on to say, “Nothing much has changed actually. Rajan and Jude know me from the time I was playing with the original Bluebirds. So recently, when they saw that I was still performing solo across venues, they invited me over to join the band again and sing for them. We came back together on Dec 31 2010, and since then we have been going strong. The sound really hasn’t changed much. We still have the same vibe as we used to back in the day,” he signs off. 15 www.museekmag.com
