Mag and cinematographers today . But , what we need to learn is the art behind it , in order to sustain well in the industry . My teachers often suggested me to look at the paintings of Rembrandt and Vermeer from the Renaissance Period , to understand the light used . I always used to get inspired from the photography works of Ansel Adams and Raghu Rai . So I feel one should get inspired from such prominent works , while exploring in photography or videography , rather than the technicality behind it . One can even hire a operator of the camera and focus more the visualisation of the image . That ’ s more important . There are two ways of doing things , one is shooting whatever subject is there , which is like documentary , more like photo journalism . You select and compose frames to shoot the most important and unique things . There ’ s not much to create from your side . The other way is to go to a barren land and create something methodically with your art director and other technicians . For that , you need to have a proper vision . You talk to your technicians about the scene , which becomes a collaborative thinking process . For me , more than where to put light in the sets , I think about the negative spaces where not to put light . In Sivaji while shooting Vaaji Vaaji song , art director Thotta Tharani created a massive place upto 70-80ft high . I was not convinced by the basic lighting setups in the set . I felt something was missing , though it was entirely lit up
