ADAM HEADLAND
Mississauga
Adam Headland, one half of the Team
T-Rex crew explains that he started
coaching because people were asking
him to prep them based on his own
condition at competitions. His first
client, in fact, was Sean Tierney, who
would eventually become his busi-
ness partner and a highly sought-
after trainer in his own right. The
two enjoyed a great time prepping
together and both learned a lot; thus
it followed that Adam started work-
ing with more people from that point.
He says that he loves the challenge
of working with a range of body
types, learning how each person will
react, and ultimately helping them
exceed their own expectations. In
a sport that is typically considered
subjective in nature, Adam’s goal has
always been unwavering: to help cli-
ents achieve their best condition
ever. After some time, Sean then
approached Adam with the idea
of forming Team T-Rex and it’s no
secret that they’ve been hugely suc-
cessful at achieving that original goal.
At present, Team T-Rex now has a
lineup that coaches anybody from
lifestyle clients, to transformations, to
novice competitors, all the way up to
IFBB Pros.
One of the most respected men in Canadian bodybuilding is Heavyweight champion
Gil Ansah, who founded J11 BodyTech nutrition, conditioning and personal training back
in 1997. Gil himself was a spectacular competitor as a South Central Ontario Overall
Heavyweight champion who went on to place Top 10 at the 2008 Arnold Classic and
Top 5 twice at the North American championships (2009 and 2010). Gil is an advocate
of “Maximum Supercompensation” or “Overreaching”,which coupled with the athlete’s
soma type, will dictate program design. Once the body is overreached, this is when the
fruit of the labour is truly realized in a big way, according to Gil. As the body replenishes,
hypertrophy, growth and performance are improved dramatically during active rest or
a short layoff. This is when Gil’s system calls for eccentric training due to its exceptional
ability to increase IGF-1 levels and aid in joint recovery. It is not unusual to see Gil’s
clients transcend plateaus repeatedly over multiple micro-cycles. "The body is truly
remarkable in its capacity to sustain and recover from load," Gil says.
