GOING ECO HOW NEAR-WATERLESS LAUNDRY MAXIMISES PROFIT AND PRESERVES THE ENVIRONMENT W hen it comes to booking holidays or short breaks, most people understand the benefits of ‘being green’ and caring about the environment. However, they expect hotels and guesthouses to lead the way to help them fulfil this endeavour. Most UK hotels have already embraced towel reuse schemes, which certainly helps them save water and energy. Results from a recent survey by Xeros showed 85% of people reuse towels because they care about the environment. However, there are much bigger strides hotels can take in terms of their approach to towels and linen to help them cut water, energy and detergent use whilst boosting customer satisfaction. Furthermore, if hotels invest in effective operational technologies, they will experience the two-fold benefits of maximising profits and maintaining competitive advantage. By bringing your laundry operation in-house using a Xeros machine, you can take steps to reduce the day-to-day operational costs associated with energy and chemical usage at your hotel by up to 30%, optimising the establishment’s profitability. Whilst traditional machines use between 40% and 70% hot water, Xeros only uses 5%, on average. With less water to heat, more energy is saved and your bills are reduced. The Xeros system only uses half the chemicals per kilogram compared to a traditional aqueous machine. The Xeros 25kg washing machine is able to use less water and deliver a gentler wash thanks to the millions of revolutionary polymer beads used in each wash. These gently remove soil and stains from fabrics, helping hotels save on average over two million litres of water each year. In April 2016 the Stanford Park Hotel in Menlo Park, California, installed two Xeros machines, developing its first in-house laundry operating system. This decision was made after severe drought in the state meant that there were severe water restrictions in place which drove up the cost of this precious resource. Since installing the Xeros system, the hotel is saving £1,281 a month on its water bills and £352 per month on energy because there is less water being used that needs heating up. This means that over the year, the hotel is now making average annual savings of £19,599 on water and energy bills alone. So, by investing in waterless and low- energy technologies such as Xeros, the revolutionary polymer bead system, commercial launderers and hotels can simultaneously take advantage of lower energy bills whilst also cutting their water use dramatically, thereby enhancing their brand image and drawing in more customers. www.xeroscleaning.com Housekeeping management 25
