the long summer nights are here ...
Many think transition is something that would only be a struggle if the transition was major, for example from nursery to reception, from infants to juniors if they are separate schools and from juniors to senior schools. Transition may also be more widely ' worried about,' by parents and school staff if children have additional needs. The transition from teacher to teacher, from class to class, whilst easily accepted by some, can be a huge deal for other children and not just those with additional needs.
Interspersed with that Summer rain that Britain is so well known for, and the BBQ season is well underway. For our children, most of the Summer testing is over and the schools are winding down ready for the long summer break planning proms, end of school plays and their transition program.
It is no surprise then, that transition can be quite upsetting for some children. They are leaving a teacher that they have come to know really well. they know the expectations, the rules, the teachers character and their classmates. To move class therefore can be huge and worries and anxieties can begin to creep in.
Children thrive on routine and security. Knowing the boundaries and what is expected of them is paramount to a child's sense of security and when children feel secure and safe, their brain learns best.
