The Division of Immunology and Rheumatology takes care of patients at University Hospital, at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’
Hospital and at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The division provides inpatient and outpatient services to adult and pediatric
patients with rheumatic diseases and bone metabolism diseases. The clinic incorporates musculoskeletal ultrasound in the diagnosis
and treatment of soft tissue and joint disorders.
Drs. Folzenlogen, Siva and Velázquez are co-directors of the Dr. Gordon Sharp ANA laboratory. The ANA Laboratory was developed by
Dr. Gordon Sharp, the founder of the University of Missouri rheumatology division, and a pioneer in autoimmune and autoantibody
research. The ANA laboratory receives thousands of samples annually for autoimmune testing from Missouri and around the country. A
repository of 35 years of clinical samples at the ANA lab provides a rich source for clinical and translational research.
Overview of education
The Division of Immunology/Rheumatology Fellowship is a two-year program designed for three postdoctoral fellows on an alternating
basis: two positions open one year; one position becomes available the next year. Our graduates have ventured on to open successful
solo practices or join prestigious groups around the country. We receive University of Missouri medical students and also residents
from the Departments of Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics and Radiology. The division is active with lectures, grand rounds, and
instructorships and Dr. Velázquez serves as the Director of the Problem Based Learning Case Development Committee for the medical
school.
