The November 9 , 1956 edition of the student newspaper was focused on the festivities surrounding the school ’ s annual football game against Fremont High School of Sunnyvale . At the time , Fremont High was Mountain View ’ s main rival , with an annual football series stretching back to 1928 . The football game between the M . V . Eagles and Fremont Indians was known simply as the “ Big Game ,” likely inspired by the California versus Stanford college football rivalry .
Mountain View High School ’ s student newspaperwas named after the school ’ s mascot ., the eagle The newly donated collection includes almost all editions of the paper from October 1954 to May 1958 . For decades , Mountain View High was officially known as Mountain View Union High School . The words “ Union High School ” were even etched in stone above the high school building ’ s main entrance on Castro Street ( see above ). This December 2 , 1955 article explains the word “ Union ” was dropped from the school ’ s name , “ because , since the building of Los Altos High School , it is no longer a union of the two cities .”
The “ Sporting Blue ” section of the newspaper gave more information about the 1956 Big Game against Fremont . In addition to the high stakes of a rivalry game , the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League ( SCVAL ) championship was on the line . The Eagles ended up winning 14-7 and earning a share of the title in front of a standing-room only crowd . Writing about the game , student reporter Henry Salas presciently wondered , “ Will it be the end of a long-standing rivalry between Mtn . View and Fremont ? Next year Los Altos will enter the SCVAL . Will this change things ?” Well , it did change things , but not quite as quickly as expected . In echoes of today ’ s world , the debut rivalry game between Los Altos High and Mountain View High was canceled due to the 1957 flu pandemic . But over time , Los Altos High replaced Fremont High School as Mountain View ’ s main rival . Today , the Los Altos versus Mountain View game is known as “ The Pride Bowl .”
