MV High 1950s Ephemera
The MVHA was very pleased to accept a collection of mid-1950s Mountain View High School ephemera from Toni Bozicevich Rodriguez ( MVHS Class of 1958 ). Toni donated six programs from Mountain View High School football games and 105 editions of the high school newspaper , The Eagle covering the 1954 through 1958 school years . Once the Mountain View History Center reopens , these items will be added to our archives . In the meanwhile , we ’ re happy to share a preview of some of the highlights from this new collection on the next three pages of our newsletter .
Members of the 1955 Mountain View Eagles varsity football team .
A very autumnal football game program cover from Mountain View High ’ s November 10 , 1955 game against Washington High School in Centerville ( Fremont ). Note the 6:00 p . m . kickoff time ; Mountain View High ’ s field ( located where Eagle Park is today ) featured stadium lights salvaged from the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island . Games under the lights were big community events in the 1950s . Stadium lights are currently being installed at the modern-day Mountain View High School and Los Altos High School fields for the first time this year .
Foster ’ s Freeze Was “ the place to meet after the game ” according to this 1957 ad . Foster ’ s Freeze was founded in 1946 in Inglewood , California . The Mountain View location on El Camino Real was one of the company ’ s first locations . In its later years , the Mountain View location ended its relationship with Foster ’ s Freeze and was known as Big Burger Freeze . It closed in 2000 and remained vacant until the building was finally demolished in 2015 .
The inside of the November 10 , 1955 football game program shows local business ads and a photo of Mountain View High School varsity cheer leaders . Note the ads for Russell Realty and Jane Ostriy Apparel , two examples of many ads in the program placed by businesses located in Los Altos . The presence of so many ads from Los Altos is a reminder that in the mid-1950s the Mountain View Eagles were the only team in both towns . Los Altos High School was built in 1954 , and it took a few years before the school would field its own football team .
