“ I got up this morning, I ask myself this every single day, ' Who can I help today?' That ' s my quest every morning, and I know there ' s somebody in this room that ' s going to make my day purposeful.”— Andre Norman
From Prison to Harvard: Wise Words from the Ambassador of Hope
Andre Norman, also known as the“ Ambassador of Hope,” shared his life story and lessons learned with attendees. After a rough childhood with minimal support and 14 years in prison, Norman turned his life around, going from one of the top gang members in prison to a Harvard Law fellow. Since 1999, he has dedicated his life to helping struggling kids and former inmates, offering them the helping hand they need to turn their lives around. And in 2024, he founded Second Chance University.
He charged the MSPs in attendance to remember to take care of their own family first. Too often, he has found that people are concerned about doing charity for impoverished youth but not taking the time to notice that their own kid is struggling.“ Never jump over your own to save somebody else’ s. Yours count too,” Norman said.“ I don’ t care if you’ re in the $ 25 Million [ MSP ] Club; I don’ t care if you’ re driving a Tesla. You have the right to ask for help. Don’ t get embarrassed and not [ reach out for support from people who can help ].”
Even Norman, who has dedicated his life to helping others, says his son always comes first, no matter what.“ You can’ t get mine,” Norman said.“ I know God gave up his one and only son, but I’ m not God. You can’ t get mine. Mine’ s with me. If [ I had to choose between ] holding him for an extra five minutes or letting the world blow up, say bye. I’ m not letting him go two seconds early to save nobody. Mine’ s first.”
